Shopping Trips Nov 14th and 27th! My Virtual Brokers Account and Budget!

Hi Gang,

With the holidays feeling like it's just around the corner, it's been a super busy time here at the Nguyen/Wei house! After trimming down my Christmas shopping list to the BARE minimum, it's still about 15 family, friends, kids and business associates I still have to buy for. Ouch right? Thank goodness I've been putting money away each week in a fund for this very expensive time of the year! And I've been hitting the clearance racks and shelves for the past little while and scooped up some amazing stuff! At least for birthdays they are spread out! Ok, let's see what my shopping trips have been and talk about Virtual Brokers!

Nov 14th at No Frills
- Highliner Frozen Fish pm'd for $5.97 and had $1 coupon each
- Gallo Olive Oil $3.97
- 3 X 18 bottles of water (left them in the car, way to heavy to carry up)
- Caesar Salad Kit $1.97
- Black and Diamond Cheese $2.97 and had 75 cent coupon
- Raspberries pm'd 2 for $3

Nov 27th at No Frills and Walmart
 - PC Tortillas $1.87
- Kettle Chips $1
- Neilson Milk $3.97
- Bananas $.57/lb
- No Name English Muffins $1
- 2 X Gingerale 2L Pops for FREE ( 2 coupons from T&T Nightmarket)
- Fresca and Barqs 2L Pop $1
- Hunts Sauce $1
- Apple Juice $1
- Nestle 24 pk water $1.97
- Miracle Whip $3
- 2 X Hellman's $3 each
- 6 Ziploc Container's at $3 each and had 2 coupons for 1 Free WUB2. Great for when we have family over for Christmas dinner to take home leftovers. Dollarama containers were more expensive and we don't buy styrofoam containers for environmental reasons.
- 4 X Maple Leaf frozen meat pies $1 each
- PC Blue Menu Alfredo sauce $2.50
- Dempster's Bread $2
- 2 X Village Chicken Wings $3 each
- Halal Chicken Hot Dogs $1

If you haven't already own a PC Mastercard, you should totally get one! They are so awesome! I save up my points all year and by Christmas time, I get a huge family Christmas dinner for almost free! I have over $150 last time I checked to spend at any Loblaws or No Frills! In my non-budgeting days, I use to hoard them for when I returned after vacation so I would have food to eat when I was dead broke! Hahaha

Ok, to the juicy stuff! As a novice of investing, it is super hard enough to figure out how to set up an account with a discount brokerage, pick your stocks and get your portfolio up and running. I had the most horrible time working with Questrade to even open a damn account. The main problem was that I have two names! My Vietnamese name and my English name. On my government issue ID it lists both names, but on all my accounts I just go by my English name. Apparently, at Questrade they were real sticklers about having the full name and having it verified on every piece of ID I gave them and my bank accounts. It was a huge pain in the ass dealing with them for months and to be bounced around from customer service agent to another with no one wanting to help me deal with the situation and being clearly ignored. I even went to the head office like they asked with my ID's and even the receptionist said he has heard numerous times how bad their customer service was! My only choice with them was to change my name on all my accounts! Which, as a performer/self employed person who get cheques written in my English name is next to nearly impossible! Who has time to track down every person who writes you a cheque and have them write your full name! Plus, I'm the one who wants to give them business and invest my money with them! They have one messed up business model with too many flaws. The only time I heard from anyone after leaving several emails with different people and voice messages is when I emailed customer support to delete my application for an account! WTF! It was so horrible, I got so fed up and went over to Virtual Brokers who are so much better! They were more understanding with my multiple names as long as the address and names match in some variation, they said I was good to go! So, after months of struggle I'm happy to say I have all my accounts opened up and funded. I have my ETF's chosen and now I'm just at the stage of bidding on them. Their website is pretty easy to use but being totally new to the world of investments, it's not like you can just bid and buy ETF's. There are all these options and stuff you need to choose along with it which make it so confusing. So, hopefully I'm getting some help tonight on how to properly buy what I want. I honestly hope all this trouble is worth it in the end! Or I'll want to have kick myself really hard and should of went the easy route of buying those StreetWise funds from ING or something that's just as easy. Or even hire a *gasp* commission based financial advisor to help me out and get me started.

Well, to leave you on a jolly note I hope you have enjoyed following me on my journey to financial wisdom, or somewhere around there! There is so much work that needs to be done budget wise before I can put my pen down and enjoy the festivities of stuffing my face with family and good friends! Since tracking my expenditures, I've been able to see what my income vs. expenses are from month to month and how much money is being spent on such categories like groceries, eating out, and etc. If you haven't started, you should give it a shot! The information you get from it is so valuable! I've been tracking for the last few years and I can see when my lean months are and prepare ahead of time! It definitely helps you sleep at ease knowing where you stand with debt and such. I've also adjusted my budget for 2014! It's amazing not to have an OSAP debt column that needs to be paid each month and that is higher than my housing cost! I love being able to allocate that money to my downpayment fun, vacation fund or other fun things I've missed out on while paying down the student loan! Eating out on a patio and spending money to do fun things with family and friends never felt so good when you are free from debt! And knowing that every dollar you earn is now yours and not on loan from the government or some other financial institution!

Happy December!

Shopping Trip Nov 4, 2013!

Hi Everyone,

My first real post since my trip to Hong Kong and Tokyo! It's been an exhausting time but one of the best times of my life! It was a two week trip in total: 10 days in Hong Kong and 4 days in Tokyo. All direct flights to lessen the pain of such a long haul to get over to that side of the world! Who knew I could fly 16 hours straight like a pro! I'll blog about my trip later in another post with some photos!

It took about two weeks to get back to our time zone and a super long time to get back into the groove of things with work and life etc. I was pretty beat! But, now I'm back, rested and ready to blog more about things that I love and not just shopping deals. It was sort of becoming a chore to get a shopping list out every Thursday! But, anyways here is what I bought this week! I also started Christmas shopping for our friend's kids so I'll be sure to post those up as well!

My First Attempt at Home Made Banana and Apple Chips!

Hi Everyone,

So, I received an email from PC about a recipe for banana chips the other day and thought it was such a cool and easy way to eat bananas a different way. Here's what they looked like! Not the prettiest or the tastiest things but edible! I think I had put too much lemon juice, which made them kind of sour!

Shopping Trip Sep 14, 2013!

Hi Super Savers!

Wow! I went to Walmart on a Saturday afternoon and it was the craziest time I've ever seen! Pure madness and aisles and aisles filled with people! It's probably as crazy, if not more than during Christmas time there! I was surprised by the mountains of stock they had left! It was strange there was no grocery section and had just coming from a funeral, I didn't think we were going to pop by a Walmart. Even without my coupon binder I did manage to pick up a bunch of great deals! Oh, I need to mention this soap is for my mom! I wish I had a crap load of those Dove coupons because I would of stocked up like mad too! Go see!

- 8 10pk Ivory soap bars at $2.84 each
- Charmin 48pk $7.86

Shopping Deals Sep 6, 2013!

Hi Gang!

We did an impromptu shopping trip after work and with no coupon binder and not too many sales, so we just headed to Costco. We had a great buy of three T-Fal pans for $30! It came with a small, medium and large size. They were quite heavy! I don't know much about buying pans but they seemed really good quality! We are also trying this new avocado oil, since it can be cooked at high heat unlike olive oil. It was pretty pricey but hopefully worth the cost! I even started my Christmas shopping! I only picked up one gift but it was a must have incase they didn't carry it again. I can't believe they busted out all the Christmas stuff already and Halloween hasn't even passed yet! Wow!

Shopping Trip Aug 14, 2013! My First Major Appliance Purchase and Home Made Quiet Book!

Good Afternoon Folks!

So much to tell you today! I had a great shopping experience last night! Great cashier at No Frills! She did tell me they only do up to four price matches for the same item but let me do a second transaction. Apparently, it isn't a new rule and they've always had it, but I was with Winton and ask if he could "buy" it. I guess I've just never price matched more than four before to notice.

It's crazy how much I feel like I'm learning this week. Especially, stuff regarding the house like caulking! Who knew you had to maintain the seal for the tub! I've seen my mom do it once or twice when I lived at home but man home stuff is expensive! The caulk itself was a couple bucks but they get you with the scraper and applicator which were $5 each. Ouch!

We also finally received our brand new washer and dryer for the condo! I LOVE it! After saving up for about a year and spending a few months researching for models and sales, the reward is soooo worth it!  I love having the money in the bank and being able to pay for things in full! We did have a little headache with the installation. We had a problem with the valve and the hoses used to hook up the machine are not insured by the condo. Luckily, we had the super at our place during this and he said he could help us by picking up the braided hose and valve we need and install it for us. It was way cheaper than finding a plumber and having him come over as soon as possible to do the work. We also had more than enough money in our washer/dryer fund to pay for the extra costs associated with the machine. Now, we have a proper working washer/dryer combo and I'm so excited to do laundry now!  You have no idea how many times I've had to stay home and keep pushing that dryer button before a load was fully dry! The idea is to keep this fund going and paying into it each week in case some other home maintenance comes up and we'll be ready for it.

 - Neilson Milk $3.88
- 3L Basket of Peaches $2.97
- Mini cucumbers $1
- Broccoli $.97
- Creamsicle $2.97
- Bananas $.57/lb
- Ferma frozen veggies $1.97
- Blueberries $1.47
- Imodium $10 (hopefully, we won't need this for our trip!)
- Hellman's $2.97
- Miracle Whip $2.99
- Black plums pm $.99/lb (Freshco)
- Royal Gala $.97/lb (Frescho)
- Ed Smith pm'd (Food Basics) $1.88 with $.75 tear pad coupon

- 6 X Olay soap bars 4 pk pm'd $2.99 (Food Basics) - $3 wub 2 (brandsaver) so $1.50 each! I was worried I lost two but they just fell out of the grocery bag in the car! Whew!

Here's a quiet book I made for Max's first birthday! My first sewing project on my own sewing machine! It's two pages but a lot of work! All in all it probably took me a good solid month to do this, but totally worth it.  P.S. Sewing straight lines are much harder than you think!

It's such a delicate process finding out the right tension and width you need for your project

I can't remember if I posted this! But, here's the birthday cake I had made for Max's birthday! Affordable new Star Wars toys are a lot harder to find then you would think! It took me more than two weeks of shopping around! Well worth it! Cake looked and tasted amazing!

Shopping deals coming up soon! Stay tuned!

Shopping Deals Aug 2, 2013 and Update!

Hiya Folks!

So, no regular grocery shopping this week! Instead, we had a pricey Costco trip to stock up on lots of stuff! We got things like soap in bulk, Oikos greek yogurt for cheap, and a pretty cool down jacket for the fall. Best part of the coat was that it can be rolled up really small, so it's good for travelling/hiking. All in all, it was a very expensive week! About $400 in total! I swear it's such a trap in there and you can't leave without spending $200 minimum! It just sucks cause they have so many great things in there! I guess in a way, I'm glad they only take Amex which I don't have so that saves me a lot by having to pay for everything by cash or debit.

This week, I'm looking forward to getting some snacks like always! I figure it's better to snack on sale and at home then keep going out and buying over priced snacks. They also come in handy when we head out to the drive in or free movies in the park! If I'd had to pick, the number one thing I'm waiting to grab is the Bio Life detergent from Shoppers. It's clearly not going back on sale of $3.77 like it was over a year ago, so I'll have to live with $5.99 instead of the regular $8-$9 it normally is. I'll probably pick up at least five bottles to hold us over till the next sale. Is it just me or do you find you do way more laundry in the summer than you do in the winter? I mean considering you wear less clothes in the summer, but there always seems laundry needs to be done all the time. Strange, huh?!

As for my goals for saving for my trip... it's going along really well! I still haven't heard from those guys at Questrade, so now I'm looking to do business elsewhere. I'm even considering the dreaded "financial advisor" from some company to get me started. I don't particularly like financial advisors, since they only advise you on what's best for them commission wise. But, I am eager to just get started and I can always figure out more stuff later. I've also been googling plenty of fee only advisors, which are way better for you but really pricey since they work by the hour and don't sell their company products. I don't want my savings eaten up fees! I'll let you know on what I decide. Ok, let's see what the dealio is on sale this week!

Shopping Deals July 26, 2013!

Hi Guys!

Few good things on sale this week. It looks like the usual stuff that goes on sale every so often. I just headed to a quick Costco trip with my boss for work stuff and I found a great deal on Duracell batteries. It seems that this week's sale was $19.99 for 48 AA batteries, which works out to just under $.42 each. It was $5 off the normal price, which I think is usually pretty cheap. I did pick up the AAA's, which were $19.99 for 28 batteries and not as cheap but I discovered were much needed for our bathroom clock! It's been out for like two weeks! Ok, let's see what to pick up this week!

Shopping Trip July 23, 2013!

Good Morning Y'all!

I was on my way home from work on Tuesday, when I found out we were about to do an impromptu trip to the grocery store. The horror and dread on my mind about having no coupon binder or no iPad for price matching. So, this trip was a very very small trip to get us by the week. Thank goodness for photo stream on the Apple devices! All the screen shots I took with my iPad automatically get transferred to my iPhone, so I was able to price match a couple items. I also learned that there is no free underground parking at the No Frills on Front Street East before 6pm. You'll have to find one of the five or so spots on the street level right in front of the store. We were lucky to have found a spot eventually, but it was packed with so many cars!

On the savings front for my trip, it's been so so... I have to admit I'm still eating out a couple times a week. It also doesn't help with the crazy weather we've been having and the black outs, forcing us to eat out. The only way I can think of combating this sluggish savings is to dedicate a day of pay each week to my spending pool for the trip. And since it's still summer, there are lots of bbq's and birthday's to go to so in a way we'll save on groceries. I'm going to try to cut back on some unnecessary spending on junk foods and stuff. Even though, I know I got to have them in the house I can buy less and save more.

On another note, since applying for Virtual Brokers to test out their trading platform. I've yet to hear from them, which is a little disconcerting since they were my top pick to trade with. If they have bad customer service before you join with them, how do you think they will treat you after you sign up and give them your money? I think I'm going to start looking for a decent financial advisor. If I could afford it, I would go the fee only way but since I'm just starting out I'll probably have to look for the regular advisors just to get started. It kind of sucks since I know they won't have my best interest at heart but their's instead with what they can make off commissions on me.

Let's see what I bought this week!

- Omega 3 egg's pm'd $3.69 at Loblaws
- 30% off ground beef $5.33 (we made delicious taco's the night!)
- Black plums pm'd Freshco $.99/lb
- 2 X Blueberries $1.44 each
- 2 X Alcan foils $.88 each
- Chapman's ice cream sandwiches $2.88
- Bananas $.57/lb
- Green lettuce $.77

A Blurb On Travelling and Shopping Deals For July 19th, 2013!

Hi Gang,

There are free Potato Thins this week! It's a new chip product I was looking to trying and now seems to be the time with the sale for $1.88 at No Frills and a Checkout51 of $2 off. Whoo hoo moneymaker! I'm also looking to pick up lychees, I have no idea what they cost when in season but $1.88/lb at No Frills seems like a good deal! If you're a big fruit eater like me, then now is the time to pick up lots of fresh fruit. But, is it just me or when you buy fruit you have to have it sit around for a few days to a week in the fridge before its sweet enough to eat?

I'm going to be in super saver mode for the next few months as I've just booked a big vacation! Yay! I still expect to be enjoying my summer but I'm really dedicated to starting a fund to pay for my play money on this trip. Thanks to my Old El Paso commercial, I'll be able to pay for this vacation in full. That's the most important thing about taking trips! You never want to go into debt just to satisfy your need to go somewhere. Trust me! I learned that the hard way! I was bit by the travel bug from a young age and many argue it's not worth the money or they don't have the money. I totally disagree! It's worth every penny and no one is making you fly to god knows where! You can take a short trip to somewhere close by. That is if you don't go overboard and budget accordingly and get deals and pay reasonable prices for everything from flights, accommodations and to what you eat while away. Remember, what you save in flights and hotels, you can spend in shopping and whatever else you want. Fly economy or even drive and get an Airbnb or stay with friends/family. You'll save tons of money with Airbnb, I've stayed with them in Paris, Berlin, and Montreal and had a great host, price and location with all of them. Make sure to read all the host reviews and their rating is in the high 90%.

The thing that people forget about when taking a trip is the stuff you have to pay for regardless if you go away or not. It's all your fixed expenses like mortgage/rent, cell phone bill, and money lost from not working (you know with me being self-employed and all). This is the stuff that I'm working hard now to save for. Not only do I want my bills paid but all my various saving goals met and paid in full. Just because I'm away, my life and goals in Toronto don't just stop. What I did was calculate what my expenses will be like up until including the month of my trip and make sure those expenses are taken care of. Anything income extra above my expenses will be my trip money, so I'm looking to pick up extra shifts if possible. I don't plan to over kill on the shopping but I'd like to have a fancy meal here and there.

On a final note, before you head off to check out the shopping list! I finally requested to open up an account with Virtual Brokers. I'm looking to get into buying some ETF's in my RRSP's. I have a very ambitious amount I'd like to hit for retirement and with about 40 years to go, I'm anxious to start! As much as I love my TFSA, I'm tired of earning the measly 1% or 2% that is currently being offered. So, hopefully you'll be able to enjoy and accompany me on my journey to a more complete financial portfolio and hopefully financial success!
